Hot Rod Circuit is a rock band from New Haven, Connecticut established in 1997.
The band was originally known as Antidote under which they released the album Mr. Glenbowski, which won the group the award of Best Unsigned Band of 1998 by Musician Magazine. The band subsequently moved to Connecticut and released If I Knew Now What I Knew Then under their present moniker.
Hot Rod Circuit has toured with The Get Up Kids, Jazz June, Saves the Day, Brand New, Eisley, At the Drive-In, and Say Anything. Guitarist, and HRC front man, Andy Jackson has actually toured as a member of the latter band.
The next album released by HRC hit record stores in September of 2000; it was named "If It’s Cool With You, It’s Cool With Me" and remains a fan favorite to this day. This was the bands second album under the name Hot Rod Circuit and subsequently helped propel HRC into a position of leadership in the new punk scene that was budding in the Northeast. "If It’s Cool…" was an album with a Bass and Percussion that yielded the unmistakable echo of the late nineties college-punk scene, yet a sound that also contained a style that mixed "southern warmth;" or classic rock 'twang' sounds reminiscent of rock greats like "Lynyrd Skynyrd," with a blend of strong and pronounced sounds that obviously stemmed from the "Alternative Grunge" style that was originally carried, (often reluctantly), into the mainstream by bands like "Nirvana" and "Pearl Jam" in the early nineties. In addition to the distinctive style Hot Rod Circuit surrendered instrumentally to the ever progressing punk scene, they also yielded the unique voice, original lyrics, and relevant subjects touched upon by the bands front man, singer and guitarist Andy Jackson. The album generated songs like "The Power Of The Vitamins" (which is often considered the favorite song of many HRC fans) and "What's Left Standing" that maintain a hard-punk sound at their core, yet still integrate somewhat harmonic melodies, (especially in the chorus verses). A harmonic melody set over the basic hardcore foundations of the song undoubtedly exists now as a standard with in the pop/punk scene today. Lyrics that not only sound great, but also attack the listener with meaningful, wise, and relevant words of advice.
The sound and style of the album is perfect in showing, (and to a degree) explaining, nineties college punk's convergence with other styles in the Alternative/Punk Rock genre. In general the convergence held influences stemming from either hardcore Punk Rock from bands like "Bad Religion", strong foundations in the classic rock of artists like "David Bowie", or arguably their largest influence originating from one of the first punk bands to have possessed many aspects of many styles and genres in rock; it has sense proved very difficult to classify them into a single genre, however a GREAT example being "The Clash". In any case, whether HRC was/is aware of their significance in the role they and the bands they played with (some of which were previously mentioned), had on the underground punk scene at the time remains hard to tell. However, what is fairly certain and difficult to refute is the molding that HRC contributed in the shaping and designing of the new and changing punk sound developing at the time in Boston, New Haven, Providence, and Long Island. Without question HRC have had a profound influence on many of the bands present in the Northeast rock scene.
Although HRC's "If It’s Cool…," represents and portrays the convergence of rock styles in 2000, the album remains a favorite of fans for various other reasons. Mainly it has stayed the favorite album not only because the lyrics Andy lays upon us are amazing, but the sound Jesse’s voice produces in this particular song hits personally to anyone listening. Below that point, I love this song because is it seems to strike a balance with in the various styles of Alternative Rock; styles that have now the backbone and support structure of the present punk rock scene.
Though HRC has never experience the fame and fortune that some of their contemporary’s have encountered, (especially with regards to the “mainstream” music industry), HRC continues to create…and as any fan will inevitably declare…contribute to the Underground Rock scene. The album, “If It’s Cool…” not only captured the hearts and minds of the growing subculture of fans in underground punk movement mounting at the time, but even more significantly, helped them earn the respect of their peers with in the punk rock scene. An example of the large amount of respect the Alternative Rock/Punk Rock subculture maintains for HRC could not have been shown more clearly than in the summer of 2006 when Brand New (a band who has been experiencing an impressive and increasing amount of success since 2003, both in the Punk world and the mainstream) held three unscheduled shows in which at that point purely to benefit the HRC front man Andy Jackson who had recently suffered a terrible fire which resulted in the loss of his house.
Regardless of their respect in the punk rock community it is Hot Rod Circuit’s fan base that, though small compared to some other bands' followings, have enabled HRC to professionally release seven albums. Even more significant perhaps is that the composition of the HRC fan base has transformed from a relatively small niche of fans into a large fan base, who many of the member maintain good writing and communication skills.
It is important to understand and learn more about two key factors when regarding any band member's experience in or out of HRC. The first is that band members, past and present, often possessed musical talents expanding beyond a single genre. The second factor refers to the significant amount of people HRC has claimed as members that, throughout the decade the band has been creating and performing music, has been present and apart of performing at some point. When one considers both of these factors, the impressive musical talents and sheer number of men who are/or/have been members in the group, it should surprise no one that members of HRC had and have side-bands. In fact HRC front man Andy Jackson has a side-band that has made two albums since 2002. If one was forced to classify the band, one would conclude Safety In Numbers is a punk band that clearly maintains a stronger hardcore basis that HRC has ever touched. SIN's songs resonates in the minds of any punk fans after their first experience listening to the band. Andy is not the only member of Hot Rod Circuit to have a side band, but his is the most successful of all the various side-bands the HRC members maintain.
Hot Rod Circuit has recently signed with Immortal Records and recorded their new full length for the label titled The Underground Is a Dying Breed mixed by Tim O'heir. The record hits stores on March 20, 2007 via Immortal Records.
The name 'Hot Rod Circuit' comes from a Mr. Burns quote on the TV show, The Simpsons. "The year is 1965, and you and I are undercover detectives on the hot rod circuit.
They have signed on to perform in the 2007 Warped Tour.
On August 4th 2007 HRC played the NY warped tour, at first what was believed to be a terrorist attack the stage caught fire and burnt down to the ground it was later discovered the fire was caused by the volume of hardcore insane rock and roll coming off the stage. “It was just too much rock for one stage to handle.” said one crew member. Their set was finished via acoustic set under the myspace tent.
On October 08, 2007. HRC announced on Myspace, that they would be breaking up after playing for 10 years.
They are planning a farewell tour.
