Ima Robot. is a rock band based in Los Angeles that formed in the early 1990s but really only came to fruition in the early 2000s after signing with Virgin Records. The band's vocalist, Alex Ebert, originally wanted to be a rapper before becoming a singer. The band's other original members were Timmy the Terror, Oligee, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, and the prolific studio drummer Joey Waronker. Meldal-Johnsen and Waronker were sought-after musicians who had played with Beck before joining Ima Robot. Their first full-length album released on September 6, 2003 was self-titled Ima Robot, and featured the singles "Dynomite" and "Song #1" (released in the UK only.) The band has toured with artists such as Hot Hot Heat, The Von Bondies, Hoobastank, The Sounds, She Wants Revenge and others. Since 2004 Waronker, Meldal-Johnsen, and Oligee have parted from the band, with former Oleander drummer Scott Devours taking over drumming duties, Filip Nikolic taking over on bass, and Andy Marlow on guitar as well as keys. On September 12, 2006 Ima Robot released their second album Monument to the Masses which featured the singles "Creeps Me Out" and "Lovers in Captivity". As of April 2007, their ties to Virgin Records have been broken and they consider themselves to now be an indie band. The band has stated on its MySpace page that work on a new album is underway. Trivia: The band's song "A is for Action" was featured in the game SSX 3. The video for "Lovers in Captivity" was produced independently of their Virgin record label and was featured in an Out Magazine[1] article. The video itself features lead singer Alex Ebert and Brady Corbet (of 24, Thunderbirds, and Mysterious Skin). The song "Dynomite" is featured in the skate video What If? by Blind. It is in Carlos Ruiz's part, in which he Backlips El Toro Handrail. The song "Alive" was feature in the skate video "That's life" by Foundation.
