August 29, 2008: "Jay-Z's Rep Explains The Reason Why He Decided To Sell His 40/40 Club In Las Vegas" After confirming that he and his partners have sold their 40/40 Club in Las Vegas for an undisclosed amount, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z explains why they are doing the sale. His spokesman Ron Burkowitz tells the Los Angeles Times that "the club was doing good business," in answer to rumors that the hip-hop appeal of the place was not welcome in Sin City. Burkowitz adds, "If you went there on a weekend you saw it was packed. Maybe, at other times it wasn't as crowded. But that is true everywhere. The club was doing fine. What is going on here is that [40/40's 24,000 square feet] is valuable real estate, and they came to us with an offer and this was a good business deal." Since new owners Las Vegas Sands Corp. has a gaming license, the new club can offer gambling. It is still unknown how much they paid for the sale. New York Post estimated the offer to be above $44 million. *** August 20, 2008: "Jay-Z Wants To Headline The Glastonbury Festival Again" Jay-Z wants to headline Glastonbury again. The "99 Problems" rapper would be happy to return to the British music festival following his controversial performance this year. He said: "Of course I'd come back. It was incredible. I'm glad it went that way, because the world was watching." "It's not about genres. It's about good music and bad music." The 38-year-old star opened his Glastonbury act with a cover of "Wonderwall," a deliberate swipe at Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher who publicly criticized the decision to book him as a headline act. He also broadcast some of the rocker's derogatory comments on giant video screens before showing clips of celebrities and royalty made to look like they were endorsing his performance. He added to MTV: "I have a sense of humor like a Brit', so I thought people would appreciate that. Noel Gallagher was one of the biggest detractors, so I figured that was a cool way to start the show." Noel has since said his comments about the star were "misrepresented." *** August 14, 2008: "Jay-Z Selling Half Of His 40/40 Club For $44 Million" Jay-Z is reportedly set to sell part of his upmarket sports bar chain 40/40 for $44 million. The rapper is said to be in talks with the Las Vegas Sands Corporation to sell them 50 percent of his company. A source told the New York Post newspaper: "That will make the 40/40 club in Las Vegas the largest sports booking operation. People can gamble both at the tables and on games. The Sands will also have the right to open 40/40 clubs in London and across Europe." Jay-Z is one of the most financially successful hip-hop artists in the world. He co-founded the Roc-A-Fella empire, which includes record labels Roc-A-Fella Records and Roc-La-Familia, Roc-A-Fella Films and urban clothing line Rocawear. In March 2007, he sold the rights to the Rocawear brand for a reported $204 million. The musician owns part of the New Jersey Nets basketball team and is said to be in the process of negotiating a contract with concert promoter Live Nation, worth a reported $150 million. *** August 11, 2008: "Jay-Z Reveals Reason For Keeping Mum On Marriage With Beyonce In September Issue Of Vibe Magazine" Rap mogul Jay-Z has opened up about why he never publicly confirmed his marriage in an interview with Vibe magazine as he graces its double issue cover. For the magazine's 15th Anniversary Juice Issue this September, the hip-hop artist appears on the two unique cover photos of the month's double issue. Jay-Z was presented 15 questions about him, one of it pertaining to his not-so-secret marriage to longtime girlfriend Beyonce Knowles in April. Although enough evidence was gathered, neither bride nor groom has ever confirmed nor talked about the nuptials. For the "Kingdom Come" hitmaker, it was something he just wanted to keep to himself. He said, "I just think it's really a part of your life that you gotta keep to yourself... You have to have something sacred to you and the people around you..." I should have something to hold onto." *** July 15, 2008: "Jay-Z Calls Amy Winehouse A "Weeble"" Troubled singer Amy Winehouse may wobble a lot but she doesn't fall down. According to rapper superstar Jay-Z, the "Rehab" songstress is simply a "weeble." Jay-Z apparently was just paying the 24-year-old Grammy Award-winning artist a compliment when he compared her to a classic toy. He tells Britain's Mail on Sunday, "She's like that toy from the 80s, the Weeble." "They had an ad campaign that went, 'Weebles wobble but they don't fall down.' Well, that's Amy. You always think she's going to collapse but she always gets back up again." *** July 15, 2008: "Jay-Z Imagines His Audience "Naked" While On Stage" Jay-Z imagines his audience naked when he performs live. The rapper doesn't care how many people he plays in front of because they are all nude in his head. He joked: "They're just people. Don't matter if it's 11 people or 11,000. I just imagine them naked." Jay-Z also revealed he was shocked by the size of the site for the Glastonbury music event. He added to Britain's The Observer Music Monthly magazine: "What was breathtaking was the entrance to Glastonbury, when you come over the hill and you see those tents. I was actually in the bathroom of the bus at the time. Everyone was like, 'Oh my God! Come out! You've got to come out now!'" "I was like, 'Wait a minute. This isn't a festival. This is a country! This is tent city.' That's when it stopped being just a concert." *** July 1, 2008: "Jay-Z Admits To Having A "British" Sense Of Humor" Rapper Jay-Z's British sense of humor inspired his Glastonbury cover of Oasis song 'Wonderwall'. The hip-hop star, who opened his controversial headline slot at the music festival with the band's 1995 hit, says he was just poking fun at one of his "biggest detractors" Noel Gallagher. Jay-Z said: "That's my sense of humor. I have a sense of humor like a Brit so I thought people would appreciate that. Noel Gallagher was one of the biggest detractors so I figured that was a cool way to start the show." Jay-Z also confessed he is a fan of the ballad and often plays the song at his restaurant.
