Jim White is a southern gothic Alternative Country singer/songwriter. He has released three albums as a solo artist. His music is based on Alternative Country, but veers off in different directions - there are occasional nods to Tom Waits; Victoria Williams sings on "Angel-Land" from Wrong-Eyed Jesus; Morcheeba played on and produced three tracks on No Such Place; Aimee Mann and Barenaked Ladies, among others, appear on Drill A Hole In That Substrate and Tell Me What You See, and he is signed to David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. That album was produced, by Joe Henry, Tucker Martine and Jim White himself. In an interview/conversation with David Byrne on the Luka Bop site (below) he describes how the album came to be made. White has had a similar career to Chris Isaak; according to various sources, he has been a comedian, a model, a boxer, a preacher, a professional surfer and a New York cab driver. Like actress Camryn Manheim, he has a sibling who teaches at Loyola Law School; his sister Katherine Pratt is a professor there. Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus, is the name of a BBC-documentary in which Jim White explains his idea of the rural South. It also features performances by like-minded musicians such as The Handsome Family, David Eugene Edwards of 16 Horsepower and Johnny Dowd. Jim White's latest outing is "Chainsaw of Life." Under the name of Hellwood, along with Jonny Dowd, and Wille B. The band toured the Album through Europe in 2006. |
