August 4, 2008: "Maggie Gyllenhaal Reveals Her Love For Being By The Ocean"

Maggie Gyllenhaal says being by the ocean makes her felt sexy. The "Dark Knight" actress admits there is something about the "wildness" of the sea that has a profound effect on her.

She said: "Being around water, and in water, makes you feel so good. The ocean is really sexy, and the wilder and wavier the better!"

Maggie, 30, also claims every man should spoil their lover with expensive gifts. She added: "I think it's the job of your lover to adorn you. My boyfriend gives me jewelry and it always looks great. Think about it - this person adores you. This is how he wants to see you."

"This is what he wants to see on your neck, your hand, your ear. A man sometimes can see what you can't. What is unconsciously beautiful or sexy about you if often the most compelling."

July 23, 2008: "Maggie Gyllenhaal Reveals She Doesn't Like Red Carpet Events"

Maggie Gyllenhaal says being on the red carpet is "unbearable." The 30-year-old actress has had to learn to ignore people's catty comments about her clothes.

Speaking about her premiere preparations, Maggie told BANG Showbiz: "To be honest it takes a while to get ready and a lot of thought. But the amount of scrutiny is sometimes unbearable.

"This time I've learned - I'm not looking at any pictures, I'm not paying attention to anything anyone says about me because it hurts sometimes. I always just wear what I think is beautiful."

She also revealed she will be voting for her late co-star Heath Ledger to win a posthumous Oscar for his portrayal of The Joker in the movie.

She added: "In order to be a good actor you have to find a place where you are free but it's very unusual to be absolutely free in the way he was in this movie. It was so inspiring working with him, it was such a pleasure. In a way I feel funny thinking about Oscars when he isn't alive, but at the same time, I'm a member of the Academy and I'll vote for him."

July 10, 2008: "Maggie Gyllenhaal Doesn't Enjoy Watching Her Fiance Strip On Screen"

Maggie Gyllenhaal hates watching her fiance strip on screen. The actress can't bear seeing actor Peter Sarsgaard get naked with other women, even though she has featured in many sex scenes during her career.

She said: "I hate it when Peter does a love scene. He's very understanding - it doesn't seem to bother him when I do one."

"I'd hate it if he was doing it. I'd put up with it, I'd understand, but I wouldn't like it."

Maggie famously acted out a full frontal nude scene in 'The Secretary' but insists it isn't something she would make a habit of doing. She said: "After 'The Secretary', people knew that I'd get naked, but I won't get naked for anything - only if it makes sense."

Maggie also says she and Peter - who have a 21-month-old daughter Ramona together - have no plans to marry in the near future.

She added to Britain's Tatler magazine: "Motherhood is incredible. It's brought me to my knees in an incredible way - it's so humbling."

"We'll get married at some point in the next 20 years."

July 1, 2008: "Maggie Gyllenhaal Credits Motherhood For Being A Better Actress"

Maggie Gyllenhaal says becoming a mother has made her a better actress.

The 30-year-old star admits having daughter Ramona, now 20-months-old, with fiance Peter Sarsgaard has "deepened" her acting ability.

She said: "I think having a child changes everything and has deepened everything in my life. I think it has deepened my acting."

"It really does crack you open in every way. I never knew that I could be so tired. I never knew that I could work so hard. I never knew that I could love so much or be so patient or be so excited by the tiniest, tiniest little thing. Everything about it has surprised me!"

Maggie Gyllenhaal also revealed it was the uniqueness of 'The Dark Knight' script and caliber of her co-stars which finally inspired her to return to work following Ramona's birth.

She added to People magazine: "I do think that it's really difficult to get me away from Ramona. It's difficult to find a script that's good enough for me to think, 'OK, I really need to do this instead of being with my daughter.'"

June 30, 2008: "Maggie Gyllenhaal Chooses Baby Over Box Office"

Maggie Gyllenhaal says motherhood made her a better actress, but now she wants to spend more time at home than in front of the cameras.

“I think having a child changes everything and has deepened everything in my life,” Gyllenhaal, mom to 20-month-old daughter Ramona, told reporters recently. “I think it has deepened my acting.”

Of motherhood, “It really does crack you open in every way,” said the actress. “I never knew that I could be so tired. I never knew that I could work so hard. I never knew that I could love so much or be so patient or be so excited by the tiniest, tiniest little thing. Everything about it has surprised me.”

It took the challenge of a unique and high-profile movie The Dark Knight, in which Gyllenhaal co-stars with Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger, to get her back to work.

In the film, she plays Rachel Dawes, Batman’s love interest, taking over the role from Katie Holmes, who played the part in the previous film.

“I do think that it’s really difficult to get me away from [Ramona],” she said. “It’s difficult to find a script that’s good enough for me to think, ‘Okay, I really need to do this instead of being with my daughter.’”

Known for her edgy performances, Gyllenhaal filmed Farlanders for director Sam Mendes last spring, “but mostly I’ve been with her,” she says. “Some people have asked me whether I’ll choose things that … have a more sort of child-appropriate content, and I don’t think so. I think I’ll choose what’s interesting to me.”

Gyllenhaal says she receives tremendous support balancing parenthood and career from fiancé, Peter Sarsgaard. “We share absolutely equally,” she explained, and added that her brother Jake Gyllenhaal is “a great uncle.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal biography (bio):
She is the older sister of Jake Gyllenhaal and the daughter of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner. Gyllenhaal began her acting career in a film directed by her father, and later achieved recognition in her own right playing her real-life brother's on-screen sister in the cult hit Donnie Darko. Gyllenhaal made her breakthrough in the sadomasochistic romance, Secretary, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination.
Gyllenhaal has chosen an eclectic range of roles, from indie films such as Sherrybaby, for which she was also nominated for a Golden Globe, to the romantic comedy Trust the Man and big-budget studio films such as World Trade Center and The Dark Knight.
Gyllenhaal is a politically active Democrat and like her brother and parents supports the American Civil Liberties Union. Gyllenhaal participated in anti-war demonstrations in the lead-up to the US-led invasion of Iraq and achieved some notoriety for being quoted as saying America was "responsible in some way" for the 9/11 attacks.

Early life:
Gyllenhaal was born in New York City, to film director Stephen Gyllenhaal and film producer and screenwriter Naomi Achs. Gyllenhaal's father was raised in the Swedenborgian religion and is a descendant of the Swedish noble Gyllenhaal family; her last Swedish ancestor was his great-great-grandfather, Anders Leonard Gyllenhaal. Her mother is from a New York City Jewish-American family, and is the ex-wife of Eric Foner, a history professor at Columbia University.
Gyllenhaal grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from the Harvard-Westlake prep school. While there, she attended a semester away program in Vershire, Vermont called The Mountain School. She graduated from Columbia University in 1998 with a BA in literature and Eastern religions and spent a summer studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Career:
Gyllenhaal's first film roles were directed by her father: Waterland (1992), her feature film debut, A Dangerous Woman (1993), and Homegrown (1998), the latter two also featured her brother. After graduating from college, she had a number of supporting roles, in such films as 40 Days and 40 Nights, Riding in Cars with Boys and Cecil B. DeMented. Paper Magazine has described these roles, including her casting as Donnie Darko`s sister opposite real-life brother Jake, as "the girl you're not supposed to notice".
Gyllenhaal's break-out role was in the black comedy Secretary (2002), a film about two people who embark on a mutually fulfilling BDSM lifestyle. The film earned Gyllenhaal widespread acclaim including a Golden Globe nomination, and marked the first time Gyllenhaal performed full frontal nudity on camera. Although impressed with the script, Gyllenhaal initially had some qualms about doing the film, which she believed could deliver an antifeminist message. But after carefully discussing the script with the film's director, Steven Shainberg, she agreed to join the project. Although insisting Shainberg did not exploit her, Gyllenhaal has said she felt "slightly taken advantage of" and in agreeing to do certain scenes she "conceded in a way that maybe in retrospect I wish I hadn't."
Gyllenhaal then had a series of supporting roles in films such as the Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman comedy Adaptation., and Mona Lisa Smile starring Julia Roberts. She also appeared in smaller independent films such as John Sayles's Casa de los Babys, and Criminal with John C. Reilly and Diego Luna. Another notable appearance was in Happy Endings in which she played a singer, and recorded songs for the movie's soundtrack. She also recently played a love interest of Harold Crick, played by Will Ferrell, in Stranger Than Fiction.
Gyllenhaal has also appeared in the theater. She starred as Alice in the Mark Taper Forum production of Patrick Marber's Closer, and performed at the Taper in a production of Tony Kushner's Homebody/ Kabul. Kushner gave Gyllenhaal the role in Homebody/ Kabul on the strength of her performance in Closer.
She has modeled for Miu Miu, a branch of the Prada fashion house, and for Reebok.
Maggie is also officially signed on to replace Katie Holmes as Christian Bale's Batman's love interest, Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight, the sequel to Batman Begins.
In 2004, Gyllenhaal was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Personal life:
Gyllenhaal has been in a relationship with actor Peter Sarsgaard since 2002. They announced their engagement in April 2006. They have a daughter, Ramona, born on October 3, 2006, and reside in Brooklyn, NY. Sarsgaard is close friends with her brother Jake.
In April 2003, Gyllenhaal spoke at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in her first college speaking engagement. Her comments focused on criticisms of the film industry and what her experience had been like thus far.

Controversy:
Gyllenhaal drew fire for a comment made during an interview with NY1 at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival where she suggested that the United States was somewhat responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks. She remarked, "I think America has done reprehensible things and is responsible in some way..." In response to the criticism, she issued a statement saying that 9/11 was "an occasion to be brave enough to ask some serious questions about America's role in the world" and that it was "useful as individuals or nations to ask how we may have knowingly or unknowingly contributed to this conflict." She pointedly denied saying that the 9/11 attacks were deserved. Gyllenhaal later said that she regretted her comments, and asserted that film interviews were not the "right place" to discuss politics. Gyllenhaal also said that she had "nothing but gratitude and admiration" for firefighters and that she should have "been more gentle and more thoughtful" in her comments.
Gyllenhaal eventually met with Port Authority officer Will Jimeno and his wife, Allison, whom Gyllenhaal depicted in the 2006 film World Trade Center. Gyllenhaal said she would have left the project if the Jimenos wanted, but Allison Jimeno expressed that she and her husband were comfortable with her and "had no problem with her in [the] movie."
