| Blood Sugar Sex Magik (sometimes written BloodSugarSexMagik or BSSM) is the fifth album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, released in September of 1991 and written and recorded at a mansion in Laurel Canyon, now owned by the album's producer Rick Rubin and known also as Damie Mathematique of Philosophical Sound Research. Rubin utilized his signature method of stripping down the sound on the album, resulting in dry, groove-laden funk tracks. This approach was a vast contrast to their previous album Mother's Milk, which emphasized epic power. Many of the lyrics in the album concern sex, one of the major focuses of Anthony Kiedis's life. To date, the album has sold 12 million copies worldwide, and is the second biggest Red Hot Chili Peppers album, behind only "Californication".
