Mike Doughty - Rockity Roll album cover | |||||||||||||||
Rockity Roll was the third solo recording released by Mike Doughty after the breakup of his former band, Soul Coughing. It is a six-song EP which he recorded in New York City over two days in May 2003 at Pat Dillett's tiny, windowless cubby at Kampo studios, a cultural center on Bond Street in New York's NoHo, owned by a prestigious Japanese calligrapher--the bottom floors of the building are studios, and the top two are dedicated to traditional Japanese calligraphy.
Everything on the record was recorded by Doughty: vocal, acoustic guitar, and programming done on a lo-fi Roland Groovebox. It was conceived as a cross between acoustic indie rock and chintzy electroclash. Though its release pre-dated Haughty Melodic, Doughty made it near the end of that disc's recording process, as a kind of breather from that album's laborious, two-year process; he wanted to see how quickly he could make and release an album. The self-released version of Rockity Roll is out of print; it's currently available as part of the Skittish / Rockity Roll two disc re-release.
